of Knitting

The freedom and personal exploration found within crafting was a huge tenet of my life growing up. My sister and I were always engaged in some artistic practice and constantly creating on our designated craft tables in the basement. My mother taught me and my sister to knit at a young age. I was always drawn to patterns with fun colors and architectural designs since I loved new stitches and construction techniques. As I grew older I loved knitting for others, especially friends who were starting their own families.5

I knitted my way through my undergraduate degree and my MLIS degree was no different. In fact I made my first friend at Pratt by knitting a pair of socks during orientation. Throughout school whenever a course required a subject matter for a project I always turned to knitting. I loved researching and discovering new things about its history.

In library school, there are two content management systems that all LIS professionals should know: Omeka and LibGuides. Omeka is an open-source publishing platform for showcasing digital objects and collections for various institutions. LibGuides offer a user-friendly content management system for website creation and resource sharing.

LibGuides are required group projects created in the introductory course Foundations of Information. I worked with two other librarians to create a LibGuide around craftivism looking at knitting, quilting, and embroidery examples. We aimed to educate and offer resources for people in NYC to connect with the crafting community. My portion focused on the history of marginalizing voices within the knitting community and how modern day knitters are combatting this.

In INFO684: Museum Information Management: Collection Cataloging and Digital Technology, I used Omeka to create a small collection of items from various digital libraries to look at the history of hand knitting prior to the invention of machine knitting. This project required me to create my own methodology and cataloging for the small collection which proved interesting as controlled vocabularies did not exist for my cataloging needs.
